Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University: Combining Traditions and the Latest Trends
Training professionals for the transport industry is a specific process that differs in many aspects from training specialists for other spheres of national economy. Working in transport segment, you have to possess the most serious background knowledge in combination with the profound practical skills.
Provision of skilled personnel determines the efficiency of the transport industry as a whole — its management, technological re-equipment, information policy, etc. That is why it is necessary to focus both on present and future circumstances. First of all, it means that transport education and science should take the lead of the industry’s innovative development. This approach to training has been implemented in Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University (the PGUPS), the first transport higher education institute in Russia, throughout a two hundred years long history.
Nowadays Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University comprises 8 faculties, 48 departments, scientific research institutes and centers, branches in various Russian cities, as well as a complex of secondary vocational education institutions. According to rating carried out by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation over recent years, the PGUPS ranks 10-13 among 175 Russia’s technical universities.
Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State Transport University trains Specialists, Bachelors and Masters in various specialties and areas: informational technologies, information security, communication, industrial and civil engineering, water supply and drainage, bridges and tunnels, rolling stock (locomotives, railways cars), power engineering, ecology, occupational safety, economics, transport operation, psychology, etc.
The PGUPS graduates obtain employment not only in the railway industry, but also at design institutes, underground railways, local and state government. The main strategic partners for the University are: JSC «Russian Railways», St. Petersburg Metro, major design, construction and operational enterprises of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region that implements national projects and programmes.
