With the involvement of students, postgraduates and graduates, the department holds international seminars and science conferences on important issues of design, construction and operation of engineering structures.

The main research done by the Department’s professors and students include:

• inspection and testing of bridges, development of recommendations to improve the reliability and durability of artificial structures;
• studying movable bridges;
• improving the design of railway bridges for high-speed railways;
• bridge design automation.

The Department’s professors took part in designing, construction and reconstruction of a large number of structures, including almost all the bridges of St. Petersburg.
